Henrikh Mkhitaryan could play as a striker for Inter Milan in order to bolster the team’s options in attack.

This according to today’s print edition of Milan-based newspaper Gazzetta dello Sport, via FCInterNews. The newspaper also note that moving the Armenian forward could also give Davide Frattesi more chances to play.

In the last few months, there has been a clear divide between Inter’s starting front two, and backup forwards.

Lautaro Martinez and Marcus Thuram have certainly proven up to the task of leading the line.

But apart from a few positive moments here and there, Marko Arnautovic and Alexis Sanchez have struggled.

This has led to some suggestions that Inter could try to sign a striker this month.

The January transfer window is open for a few more weeks. There could be opportunities to bolster the attack.

But the Gazzetta report that, despite the rumours, that is unlikely.

It would simply not be financially feasible for Inter to sign a striker this month.

Therefore, the team could look for a different solution that doesn’t involve signing a player.

Henrikh Mkhitaryan Could Play As A Striker For Inter

The Gazzetta report that Inter coach Simone Inzaghi could in fact use Mkhitaryan as a striker.

The 34-year-old former Arsenal and Manchester United man has more or less exclusively played as a box-to-box midfielder this season.

That has been the position he had largely played at Roma as well.

But Mkhitaryan is a versatile player who has played in a variety of positions.

For Shakhtar Donetsk and Borussia Dortmund, the Armenian had largely played as a winger or attacking midfielder. And even occasionally as a striker.

And in the Premier League as well, Mkhitaryan was more of an attacking player.

Therefore, it would not be out of the question to pair the veteran midfielder with another striker.

This would also have an additional benefit. Inter could start to get more of a contribution from Frattesi in midfield.

So far, the Italian international has been used quite sparingly. He has still started only one Serie A match.

The reason for this has been that Frattesi has been behind Mkhitaryan and Nicolo Barella in the pecking order.

But if Mkhitaryan were playing elsewhere, then the 24-year-old ex-Sassuolo midfielder could have more opportunities.
