Midfielder Davy Klaassen will leave Inter Milan after one season as the club aim to bring in Napoli’s Piotr Zielinski next summer.

This according to today’s print edition of Milan-based newspaper Gazzetta dello Sport, via FCInterNews. The newspaper outline the Nerazzurri’s prospective strategy for their midfield going forward.

Inter have yet to decisively move for Napoli midfielder Zielinski.

But all indications are that the Pole will not extend his contract with the Partenopei. And then it is Inter who are ready to snap him up on a free transfer.

If the Nerazzurri do pull off that high-profile transfer coup, it would prompt the question of how such an experienced Serie A player of undeniable quality fits into the midfield picture.

Clearly, Inter would not be signing Zielinski as just a squad rotation option.

And the Gazzetta anticipate that one player in particular certainly has no future at Inter if Zielinski arrives.

Davy Klaassen Out The Door At Inter If Piotr Zielinski Arrives

The first-choice trio this season has been Henrikh Mkhitaryan, Nicolo Barella, and Hakan Calhanoglu.

Calhanoglu signed a contract extension last summer and will certainly stay. And the Turk also plays a different role than Zielinski anyway.

Kristjan Asllani is Calhanoglu’s main backup.

And as far as the box-to-box midfielders, both Mkhitaryan and Barella will be in the picture next season.

The former signed a contract extension at the end of last month.

And the latter should also put pen to paper on a new long-term deal some time in 2024. Inter have made agreeing a contract extension with Barella a priority.

Meanwhile, there is little indication that Davide Frattesi would possibly leave after just one season.

The ex-Sassuolo midfielder has been growing into the team gradually.

So that would make Zielinski more of a long-term Mkhitaryan replacement than anything.

Given that the Armenian will be 35 at the start of next season, Inter are well aware that he will not be playing at his current levels forever.

And so Zielinski could come in to both back up Mkhitaryan, and also compete for the former Manchester United and Arsenal veteran’s spot.

This would mean that there would be no place for Klaassen.

Inter signed the Dutchman on deadline day during the last summer transfer window. He has been the player who adds some depth in midfield.

But with Zielinski coming in, there would be little need for the former Ajax and Everton midfielder.
