Twelve months separate Inter Milan’s away trip to Monza from the last one, but there is a world of difference.

This is highlighted in today’s print edition of Turin-based newspaper Tuttosport, via FCInterNews.

There’s a certain parallel between this evening’s match between Inter and Monza and the last time the Nerazzurri made the trip to Brianza in Serie A.

Both times, Inter had been playing their second match in January.

And on both occasions, the Nerazzurri were coming into the match off the back of a win to start the year.

In the first match of 2023, Inter got a statement win over eventual champions Napoli.

The first outing of 2024 saw the Nerazzurri beat relegation-battlers Hellas Verona, albeit with plenty of late drama and more than a hint of controversy.

Twelve Months & A World Of Difference Separate Inter Away Trips To Monza

The last time Inter played at the U-Power Stadium, they saw all the momentum and positive energy from their win over Napoli come to a screeching halt.

The Nerazzurri were leading in stoppage time of that match. But a last-gasp Denzel Dumfries own goal saw them have to share the points.

There was also some major refereeing controversy in that match.

Match official Juan Luca Sacchi had blown his whistle just before a Nerazzurri goal during the second half, which would have made the scoreline 2-2.

However, replays suggested that the foul that Sacchi thought he’d spotted was not a foul at all.

It was an error by the referee. He should have instead waited, held his whistle, and let VAR assess the situation.

Twelve months later, the VAR controversy came in the previous match.

Inter’s late winner against Verona stood despite an apparent foul by Alessandro Bastoni in the buildup.

Moreover, the performance against the Gialloblu was not a convincing one.

Therefore, the Nerazzurri will have a different aim compared to last January in Brianza.

That time around, inter had been aiming to keep in a positive direction after a big win over Napoli. They failed to do so.

This time, the last result was not a big statement win – on the contrary, it was truthfully an unconvincing performance by Inter.

Therefore, the Nerazzurri will want to get things back on track against Momza.
