Wingback Denzel Dumfries is hoping to start for Inter Milan in tomorrow evening’s Supercoppa Italiana final against Napoli.

This according to today’s print edition of Milan-based newspaper Gazzetta dello Sport, via FCInterNews. The newspaper anticipate that it will be between Dumfries and Matteo Darmian.

In the Supercoppa semifinal against Lazio on Saturday, Inter coach Simone Inzaghi decided to give Darmian the nod on the right flank.

The 34-year-old former Manchester United and Torino veteran is versatile enough to start on both the right side of a back three and in the right-wingback role.

And with Benjamin Pavard starting in the former position, Darmian played on the right.

This meant that Dumfries was on the bench in the starting eleven on Friday.

Denzel Dumfries Hoping To Start For Inter Vs Napoli In Supercoppa Italiana Final

The Dutchman has frequently been the first-choice starter on the right for this season.

Particularly when the ever-reliable Darmian has been starting in defense rather than on the flank.

But Dumfries was not in the starting eleven against Monza in Serie A either.

The former 27-year-old PSV wingback has had one or two injury and fitness problems this season.

So there is a sense that Dumfries is not at his best in a physical sense. This was likely a factor in Inter coach Inzaghi’s decision to start Darmian on Friday.

But with Darmian having put in an intense shift against Lazio, Dumfries could be the preferable option for the coach tomorrow.

The Gazzetta anticipate that Inzaghi’s decision is still very much up in the air.

The Nerazzurri boss will assess both Darmian and Dumfries during the next couple training sessions. And then he will make his decision tomorrow.

Meanwhile, the Gazzetta report, Federico Dimarco will retain his place on the opposite side of the pitch playing at left-wingback.
