Former Nerazzurri captain Beppe Bergomi feels that Inter Milan must start thinking about squad rotation at this stage of the season.

The 1982 World Cup winner gave his views whilst speaking on Italian broadcaster Sky Sport Italia, via FCInterNews.

So far this season, the hierarchies have been fairly clear at Inter.

There is not necessarily an automatic first-choice starter on the right flank between Denzel Dumfries and Matteo Darmian.

And Inter coach Simone Inzaghi has shuffled the pack a bit in defense to compensate for injuries.

But by and large, the 47-year-old has a clear idea of what his strongest team looks like.

Inzaghi may make one or two changes to avoid putting out an identical starting eleven week after week. Players like Carlos Augusto and Marko Arnautovic have started here and there.

But the coach largely has not made wholesale changes between matches.

Only in matches deemed to be of relatively little importance have Inter seen any significant turnover in terms of the starting lineup.

Beppe Bergomi: Now Is The Time For Inter Milan To Start Rotating Squad

In the view of former Inter defender and captain Bergomi, however, that has to change.

He noted that in terms of the title race, “Juve have a simpler fixture list. Inter’s is tougher, and they also have the Champions League.”

“This is the point where Inter have to start getting more of the squad involved,” he continued. “Even if it’s at the cost of a few points.”

“Otherwise they won’t be able to play all these matches with the same two strikers and midfielders.”

Bergomi observed that “They’re the oldest team in Serie A.”

“Every year they lose important players,” he went on.

“The players who come in to replace them are question marks – and then they turn out to be good.”

Bergomi said that “What Inter have done well is sign players like Sommer, Darmian, Mkhitaryan, Acerbi.”

“I continue to say that Inter are not the strongest team,” the former captain argued.

“But they’re the best when it comes to fitting the players they have together and getting them to perform.”

“And then we can’t forget about Milan, who are third in the race for the title.”
