Inter Milan wingback Denzel Dumfries is a doubt for Sunday’s match against Fiorentina, with Matteo Darmian to start in his place.

This according to today’s print edition of Milan-based newspaper Gazzetta dello Sport, via FCInterNews.

34-year-old former Manchester United and Torino defender Darmian has started on the right flank in each of Inter’s last three matches.

The Italian international, capable of playing either at right-wingback or on the right side of a back three, started on the right in a 5-1 win over Monza in Serie A.

That was Inter’s most recent league fixture.

Then, Darmian had started for Inter in both Supercoppa Italiana matches in Saudi Arabia. He started in the semifinal against Lazio, and the final against Napoli.

Dumfries was on the bench in both of those matches.

Dumfries A Doubt For Fiorentina Vs Inter – Darmian To Start

According to the Gazzetta, Dumfries is once again unlikely to be in the starting eleven for Inter’s match away to Fiorentina on Sunday evening.

The Dutchman has recently been on “family leave.”

And there is also the issue of Dumfries’s fitness.

The 27-year-old has had some niggling fitness issues throughout the current season.

And Dumfries had also been out for several weeks with a thigh injury during December.

Therefore, even though the former PSV wingback is currently available, there has been a sense that he is not yet able to play at his best.

Inter will wait for Dumfries to find his best form on a physical level.

And Tajon Buchanan also arrived at the start of this month. The Canadian is the player who Inter signed to take the place of Juan Cuadrado.

But Buchanan is hardly ready to start matches just a couple weeks into his Inter career.

Therefore, in the meantime, Darmian will continue to fill in in the starting eleven. He will do so against Fiorentina this weekend.
