Legendary Inter Milan fullback Douglas Maicon compares the current squad to the treble-winning version from the 2009/10 campaign.
The Brazilian spent six largely successful years at Appiano Gentile, cementing himself as one of the best right-backs in the world at the time, if not the ultimate best.
Nevertheless, his most enthralling season remains 2009/10, when he and his teammates went on to lift the Scudetto title, Coppa Italia and most notably the Champions League in an unprecedented achievement for the club.
Curiously, the 42-year-old sees some aspects of the treble-winning side in the current edition of the Nerazzurri.
He underlines the solid defense and a free-scoring striker as common features.
“Inter are having a good campaign. Last year, they reached the Champions League final when no one believed it possible,” said the former AS Roma and Man City player in his interview with Sky Sport Italia via FcInterNews.
“One thing that reminds me of the 2010 side is the fact that they have a great defense, then up front there is Lautaro Martinez who is a great striker.
“I hope they can get go all the way in the Champions League this season.”
Maicon Notes Some Common Aspects Between Present-Day Inter Milan & Treble-Winning Squad
Maicon also lauded the signing of Marcus Thuram who’s proving to be a great addition to the club.
“This year, Inter brought in an important player like Marcus Thuram. No one expected him to be this strong.”
Finally, the Nerazzurri legend reveals that he and his old treble-winning comrades remain in touch.
He’s also sympathetic towards his former coach Jose Mourinho who has been recently sacked by Roma.
“Of course we’re still in touch. We have a group chat. We had a collective video call with Mourinho.
“He did well at Roma, even won a European title. I’m sorry he left, but he remains a great coach”.
