Simone Inzaghi showcased his mastery of the “art of squad rotation” in Inter Milan’s Serie A win over Fiorentina on Sunday.

This is the view in today’s print edition of Milan-based newspaper Corriere della Sera, via FCInterNews.

Not all of the changes that Inzaghi made to the Inter lineup over the weekend were the coach’s decision.

The 47-year-old had to do without both of Nicolo Barella and Hakan Calhanoglu.

The two members of Inter’s first-choice midfield trio were both absent through suspension.

So Inzaghi handed opportunities to both Kristjan Asllani and Davide Frattesi to start.

And naturally, the relative lack of experience that that duo meant that the coach was always likely to lean on some key senior players elsewhere in the team.

Henrikh Mkhitaryan added a veteran presence to balance the midfield along the two younger player.

And in attack Inzaghi went with the free-scoring pair of Lautaro Martinez and Marcus Thuram.

But that doesn’t mean that the coach didn’t make a couple other bold decisions.

Apart from the two enforced changes, Inzaghi also left out a couple other key starters.

Federico Dimarco didn’t play a single minute, with Carlos Augusto playing on the left flank.

And in defense, Stefan de Vrij played out the full ninety minutes. Alessandro Bastoni played the first hour, and then Francesco Acerbi saw out the remaining thirty or so minutes.

Leaving out players like Dimarco and Acerbi from the start was a gamble for Inzaghi.

But it was one that paid off.

Inter got the result that they came for. The balance of the team was right, even without some key starters playing.

And all of Calhanoglu, Barella, and Dimarco have gotten an extra day’s rest ahead of next weekend’s match against Juventus.

Meanwhile, Bastoni and Acerbi will both be fresher than if they’d both start against Fiorentina.
