Inter Milan goalkeeper Yann Sommer can feasibly break the Serie A record for most clean sheets in a single campaign.
The 35-year-old signed the Nerazzurri in the summer following a brief spell at Bayern Munich. He arrived as a replacement for Andre Onana who joined Man Utd.
The experienced Swiss immediately proved his worth in Italian football
He has already registered 19 clean sheets across all competitions this season. On the other hand, he only allowed 12 goals in 29 appearances.
While these are undoubtedly impressive numbers, Sommer has a genuine chance of making history.
The veteran custodian has already earned 14 clean sheets in Serie A.
As La Gazzetta dello Sport (via FcInterNews) explains, Sommer isn’t too far away from breaking the record for the most Serie A shutouts in one campaign.
The current record is shared by three custodians who all managed to collect 21 clean sheets.
Chief among them is Juventus legend Gianluigi Buffon who accomplished this feat twice (2011/12 and 2015/16).
Former Roma goalkeeper Morgan De Sanctis (2013/14) equaled his compatriot’s record in 2013/14, while Lazio’s Ivan Provedel joined the elite club last term.
Nevertheless, Sommer’s stats suggest that he can go beyond all three.
Inter Milan Goalkeeper Yann Sommer Is Eight Clean Sheets Away From Breaking Serie A Record
The Switzerland international can break the record by collecting another eight clean sheets in his club’s 16 remaining fixture.
While this isn’t an easy feat amidst Inter’s packed schedule, his season percentage suggests it’s feasible.
Sommer would be the one to enter to history books, but credit must also go to the entire team, especially Inter’s valiant defenders, the likes of Francesco Acerbi, Alessandro Bastoni and Benjamin Pavard.
