Former Inter Milan coach Jose Mourinho reveals that he tried to lure Roma icons Francesco Totti and Daniele De Rossi to Appiano Gentile.

The Italian duo are two of the most beloved figures in the history of the capital club.

Totti remained loyal to the cause until announcing his retirement in 2017 when the club refused to renew his contract.

For his part, De Rossi spent the vast majority of his career serving Roma. He eventually called it a day following a brief spell at Boca Juniors.

Nevertheless, there was a time when Mourinho tested their resolve by trying to sign them during his memorable stint at Inter between 2008 and 2010.

The Special One made the revelation in a recent interview when discussing which players he would have loved to coach.

“I don’t have a particular player in mind. For instance, Messi never needed a coach. Who can say ‘I was Messi’s coach’? It seems absurd to me, because he knows it all and can do it all,” said the 60-year-old in an interview with Ohm’s YouTube channel via FcInterNews.

“Then there are obviously many top stars. To tell you something in connection with Roma, I wanted De Rossi at Inter and Real Madrid, but it wasn’t possible.

“I also wanted Totti at Inter, even if was at a relatively advanced age. But it also wasn’t possible. They are players that I always wanted to coach.”

Curiously, it was De Rossi who replaced Mourinho as Roma’s manager following his recent sacking.

On Saturday, the 2006 World Cup winner will guide the Giallorossi against Inter Milan in what will be his first stern test as Roma coach.
