Former Juventus, Lazio, and West Ham United striker Paolo Di Canio feels that Inter Milan should’ve already won the Serie A title in Simone Inzaghi’s first season in charge.

Di Canio gave his thoughts to Italian broadcaster Sky Sport Italia, via FCInterNews.

Inter are far from actually getting their hands on the Serie A title this season.

The Nerazzurri have fifteen more matches to go in which to see out their lead over Juventus at the top of the table.

But all signs point towards Inter being able to do just that.

By virtually any metric, the Nerazzurri have been the outstanding team in the Italian top flight so far this season.

Inter have scored the most goals in the competition. And they have conceded the fewest.

But this is not the first time that the Nerazzurri have been in a position like this with Inzaghi as coach.

During the 2021-22 campaign, the former Lazio boss’s first in charge of the club, Inter had a similar lead over city rivals AC Milan.

But it was the Rossoneri who pipped their derby rivals to the title on the final day of the season.

Di Canio: Inter Should Already Have Won Serie A Title Three Years Ago

In the view of former striker Di Canio, Inter really ought to have seen out their advantage the first time around, rather than having to wait at least until this season to win the title.

“Inter are three years late,” the former striker said.

“They should have won the title three years ago. But due to the inexperience of their coach and the players, they were unable to.”

“Last season’s Champions League final gave the team an extra push. And it has brought everything out, from a team that already had everything in place to win three years ago.”

“But now they’ve reached full maturity,” Di Canio argued.

“What they’re doing now is really quite incredible,” he added.

Di Canio also gave his thoughts on the way that Yann Sommer has replaced Andre Onana at Inter.

“When Onana left, people were acting as though they had lost Buffon,” the former Italian international argued.

“He had a very good season. But he’s a player who always seemed to have a couple errors in him at Ajax.”

He went on that “Sommer is a player with many caps for the Swiss national team. He’s the starting goalkeeper for them.”

“He’s a great player,” Di Canio added of the Inter keeper.
