Sad news for the world of football as legendary former Inter Milan & Germany defender Andreas Brehme has passed away unexpectedly.

German outlet Sport Bild report that the iconic former player passed away from a heart attack during the night between Monday and Tuesday. He had been 63 years old.

Brehme was one of the most recognizable faces in both German and Italian football during the late 1980s and early 1990s.

The former defender experienced his highest-profile moment internationally by helping West Germany to win the World Cup in 1990.

Brehme took the decisive penalty in the final of that competition against Argentina.

But the German was also one of the most iconic figures from one of Serie A’s most iconic eras.

Brehme spent four years as an Inter player. There, he joined countryman Lothar Matthaus, and later Juergen Klinsmann.

With the Nerazzurri, Brehme won the Serie A title during the 1988-89 season. He also helped Inter to a UEFA Cup win in 1991.

Brehme was undoubtedly one of Inter’s key players during that period.

Brehme was famous for his ambidextrous style, equally strong with both feet.

The German could play as a very attack-minded winger, providing goals and assists. But he was also proficient defensively, and could even cover in midfield.

Brehme played for the likes of Kaiserslautern and Bayern Munich in Germany during the 1980s.

Then, at the age of 27 the German made the move to Inter.

Brehme made a total of 155 appearances for the Nerazzurri across four seasons. He scored a total of twelve goals for the club.

The German left Inter in 1992, spending a season at Real Zaragoza in La Liga. Following that, he returned to Kaiserslautern where he spent several seasons before hanging up his boots.

Whilst an Inter player, Brehme won the World Cup with Germany, in 1990. He was a stalwart for Die Mannschaft, making 86 appearances and scoring eight goals for the national team.

Efforts were made to revive the legendary former defender. However, these were unsuccessful, and Brehme sadly passed away.
