Legendary former Inter Milan goalkeeper Walter Zenga has paid tribute to his departed former teammate Andreas Brehme.

Zenga mourned the German’s loss in a post on his Instagram account. He wrote that Brehme is “gone too soon.”

The world of football has suffered a significant loss in the form of former defender Brehme.

The German unexpectedly passed away early this morning. He was 63 years of age.

Furthermore, Brehme had enjoyed a successful career playing for the likes of Kaiserslautern, Bayern Munich, and Inter. He also won the World Cup with Germany in 1990.

And Brehme made a big impression on Inter in particular – the club, the fans, and his former teammates.

The German had spent four seasons with the Nerazzurri between 1988 and 1992.

Those were successful years, seeing Inter win the Serie A title with a record-breaking points total in 1989.

And there were many other iconic names in that squad – though even then, Brehme’s stood out. One legendary former player who called Brehme a teammate was former goalkeeper Zenga.

And the ex-Italian international is one of many mourning the unexpected loss of Brehme.

For Zenga, the passing of the German icon is more than just the loss of a big name. It is a personal loss of a friend.

Zenga wrote, “Goodbye, my friend. Or as I called you, “Shazzy.”

“You shouldn’t have done this to me, you shouldn’t have done this to all of us.

“You left too soon, my friend. But I know that you’ll be protecting us from above.”

“And as always, you’ll step up to take penalties. One with your right foot, one with your left…”

Zenga bids Brehme goodbye, “Have a safe journey, my friend. Rest In Peace.”

“I won’t tell you that I’m crying, because I know that you’s just hug me and tell me, ‘Come on Walter! I’m here!’

In conclusion Zenga ended his post with: “Goodbye Andi. RIP.”
