Inter Milan did not concede a single shot on target in yesterday evening’s Champions League win over Atletico Madrid.

Today’s print edition of Milan-based newspaper Gazzetta dello Sport, via FCInterNews, highlight how this was the first time since 2006 that the Nerazzurri had done so in the Champions League.

Former Bayern Munich keeper Yann Sommer is used to being a spectator since his move to inter.

The 35-year-old has kept clean sheets more often than not when he has played for the Nerazzurri.

And sometimes that is down to the work of Sommer as much as anything else.

The Swiss international has been called into action on numerous occasions. He has produced some excellent saves in a Nerazzurri shirt.

But in some matches, Sommer has not only not had to pick the ball out of his own net – he has not even had to save a single effort on target.

That was the case against Salernitana on Friday.

Against the relegation-battlers, Inter did not allow a single shot on target.

That was impressive enough. But yesterday, the Nerazzurri produced something far more eye-catching by not conceding a single shot on target to European giants Atletico Madrid.

Inter Do Not Concede A Shot On Target Vs Atletico Madrid

In yesterday’s round of sixteen first leg, the Colchoneros took a total of seven shots.

This was more than the meagre one shot that Salernitana managed in Inter’s prior match.

And on a couple of occasions, Atletico even had some dangerous-looking opportunities.

But none of the Spanish team’s efforts forced a save out of Sommer.

The goalkeeper had to stay alert. But he did not ultimately have to get in the way of anything.

Some of this was undoubtedly down to the fact that the Atletico players were not accurate with their efforts. But it also showed that Inter were defending very well by forcing their opposition to rush their efforts.

Defender Stefan de Vrij, in particular, commanded his penalty area.

As the Gazzetta notes, this was the first time since a group stage match against Sporting CP in 2006 that Inter managed to avoid conceding even one shot on target in a Champions League match.
