Inter Milan captain Lautaro Martinez will be aiming to break his “taboo” against Genoa in this evening’s Serie A match.
This is highlighted in today’s print edition of Milan-based newspaper Gazzetta dello Sport, via FCInterNews.
Of the nineteen other teams currently in Serie A, Martinez has found the back of the net against eighteen.
That includes big goals against Inter’s biggest rivals such as AC Milan, Juventus, Napoli, Roma, and Lazio.
That is hardly a surprise. Martinez has been scoring prolifically for some time.
This season, that has been more the case than ever. The Argentine has so far gotten on the scoresheet 24 times in Serie A in his first campaign as Inter’s captain.
This makes Martinez the clear favourite to finish the season as Serie A’s top scorer.
It also means that the Nerazzurri captain will have one eye on the all-time Serie A goalscoring record of Ciro Immobile and Gonzalo Higuain.
Inter Captain Lautaro Martinez Hopes To Banish Genoa “Taboo”
But there is one team currently in Serie A who Martinez has not yet scored against.
Since his arrival at Inter in the summer of 2018, the Argentine has not yet found the back of the net against Genoa.
On paper, that is somewhat surprising. After all, the Grifone have tended to be a lower-table side over much of the past few years.
And Martinez has naturally scored more goals against weaker opposition than against teams higher up in the table.
There are a couple of factors that perhaps make this “taboo” less surprising.
For one thing, Martinez has gotten more prolific for Inter with each passing year.
So the 26-year-old is always more likely to score against any given opposition than he had been in his first couple of campaigns with the club.
Then, there is the fact that Genoa had spent last season in Serie B. Naturally, that deprived Martinez of a couple opportunities to score against the Ligurians.
Genoa did come straight back up to the top flight for this campaign.
But that did not mean that Martinez was able to have a run at them right away.
The Inter captain – whose fitness is one of the reasons that he is able to score as frequently as he does – happened to miss a couple matches at the end of December.
And one of those happened to be away to Genoa. Marko Arnautovic scored for Inter in a 1-1 draw, but Martinez was of course not able to.
But the Inter captain will be targeting this evening’s match as an opportunity to finally break the “taboo.”
If Martinez scores this evening, then he’ll have done so against every team currently in Serie A.
