Former Napoli midfielder Valon Behrami feels that it’s remarkable that Simone Inzaghi had his future at Inter Milan in the balance not that long ago.

The Swiss international noted the ironic trajectory of Inzaghi at Inter on Italian broadcaster DAZN, via FCInterNews.

Now, the thought of Inzaghi being sacked by Inter seems almost ridiculous.

If the 47-year-old were to depart from the Nerazzurri, it would almost certainly be because he had accepted a position at another top European club. Not because Inter had dismissed him.

This is, of course, because of the remarkable season that Inter. And the huge hand that Inzaghi has had in it.

The former Lazio coach has this Inter team under his control more than ever.

And Inzaghi’s tactical vision has turned the Nerazzurri into the dominant force in Serie A, as well as giving them a real shot at the Champions League – having reached the final of the competition last season.

Behrami: To Think, Simone Inzaghi Was On The Brink At Inter

Last spring, however, it seemed like a very real possibility that Inter could sack Inzaghi.

This was the result of some truly awful form from the Nerazzurri in the league.

Inter went on a shocking run that saw them drop fourteen points from fifteen in five matches.

This led to plenty of rumours that the Nerazzurri could sack their coach at the end of the campaign – or even take the rash step of parting ways before then.

But Inzaghi held on. Inter never lost their trust in their coach, and Inzaghi rewarded the club with a trip to the Champions League final. And then subsequently with this season’s form.

“He’s done a fantastic job in recent years,” commented former midfielder Behrami.

“And to think, his job looked to be in the balance not that long ago. And they probably would have sacked him if he hadn’t reached the Champions League final.”
