Matteo Darmian is the favourite over Denzel Dumfries to start for Inter Milan against Atletico Madrid tomorrow evening.

This according to today’s print edition of Milan-based newspaper Gazzetta dello Sport, via FCInterNews. The newspaper report that the pair are the only selection doubt in the mind of Simone Inzaghi.

Tomorrow evening, Inter will face what is surely one of the most important matches of their season.

The Nerazzurri have a chance to reach the quarterfinals of the Champions League.

And there is the matter of Inter’s advantage from the first leg, which they won 1-0.

But there is also the matter of the fact that the second leg is in Madrid. There is no doubt that a team of the quality of Atletico will be a different proposition at their home the Metropolitano.

So Inzaghi will aim to start his strongest possible eleven, naturally.

Darmian Ahead Of Dumfries To Start For Inter Vs Atletico Madrid

According to the Gazzetta, that means that Inzaghi largely knows who he’ll go with already, and has for some time.

In goal, naturally, it will be the first-choice Yann Sommer.

And then the backline of Alessandro Bastoni, Francesco Acerbi, and Benjamin Pavard will line up in front of the Swiss.

In midfield, it will be the usual starting trio. That means that Nicolo Barella, Henrikh Mkhitaryan, and Hakan Calhanoglu will start.

And the strike partnership will be captain Lautaro Martinez and France international Marcus Thuram.

On the left flank, it will be Federico Dimarco, undoubtedly. But it is on the other side of the pitch where there is still some doubt in Inzaghi’s mind.

Both of Darmian and Dumfries are available as starting options at right-wingback.

But according to the Gazzetta, it is the former who is likely to get the nod.

The 34-year-old former Manchester United and Torino defender had also started in the position in the first leg.
