Inter Milan captain Lautaro Martinez could soon ink a new contract following an important breakthrough in the negotiations yesterday.

The Nerazzurri were in the Spanish capital on Wednesday for the second-leg clash against Atletico Madrid in the Champions League Round of 16.

Sadly for the Serie A leaders, they returned home after suffering dramatic elimination. The Spaniards scored a late equalizer to draw level on aggregate, which ultimately culminated in penalty shootouts.

The home side prevailed, with Lautaro Martinez sending the decisive shot over the woodwork.

But despite the major disappointment on the pitch, it appears that the club’s directors found some success off the pitch.

According to Tuttosport via FcInterNews, Inter directors met Lautaro’s agent Alejandro Camano during the day.

While it was supposed to be a swift chat over a cup of coffee, the summit lasted more than an hour.

As the Turin-based newspaper explains, the club has decided to raise its offer for the Argentine star. While the Nerazzurri had initially put 8 million euros on the table, they are now willing to pay the skipper 9M per year as net wages.

Inter Milan & Lautaro Martinez Ever Closer To Reaching Full Agreement Over Contract Renewal

The source expects the two parties to meet again next month, but believes the path is in now clear for a full accord.

Therefore, the agreement now appears to be closer than ever. All that’s missing at the moment is a green light from club president Steven Zhang.

Martinez joined Inter in 2018 and gradually cemented himself as the ultimate talisman.

Despite yesterday’s botched spot kick, the World Cup winner has been enjoying a sensational campaign. He currently tops the Serie A scoring charts with 23 goals.

His current deal will expire in 2026, but the management would like to push back the deadline by a few years.
