The Italians had earned a slim advantage by winning the first leg at home. But it wasn’t enough to book a place in the quarter-finals.

Federico Dimarco opened the scoring in the second leg, but Antoine Griezmann restored hope for the Spaniards two minutes later.

In the 83rd minute, Memphis Depay equalized the score on aggregate to take the match to extra time. The Colchoneros eventually prevailed on penalty shootouts.

For his part, Thuram had a disappointing evening on a personal level as well. He failed to capitalize on a chance to kill off the match in the 73rd minute.

Nevertheless, the Frenchman refused to get despaired by the result.

The 26-year-old calls on his teammates to keep their heads held high while insisting that he has faith in his “brothers”.

“Today we are all affected by the elimination,” admitted the France international in his Instagram post.

“But I have faith in this team and in my brothers. I have faith in our family. I know that we will react well.

“We still have a lot to do. So let’s raise our heads and achieve our objectives. Amala Inter!”

The World Cup finalist signed for the Nerazzurri on a free transfer last summer after seeing out his contract with Borussia Monchengladbach.

He has thus far scored 12 goals and delivered 11 assists across all competitions.
