The early elimination from the Champions League shed light on three Inter Milan summer transfers that have seemingly backfired.

The Nerazzurri were hoping to return from the Spanish capital with a ticket to the quarter-finals.  However, it was Atletico Madrid who prevailed after turning the tie in their favor.

Diego Simeone’s men cut a two-goal deficit to force extra time before finding success on penalty shootouts.

So according to La Gazzetta dello Sport via FcInterNews, the club’s exit from the Round of 16 exposed three summer transfer flops.

The first is Marko Arnautovic who didn’t even take part in the second leg due to a muscle injury.

The 34-year-old replaced Marcus Thuram at the interval in the first leg, but wasted several glorious chances.

Although he eventually scored the solitary goal of the San Siro clash, his misses eventually proved costly.

Moreover, the Austrian’s physical problems have been weighing heavily on the squad this season, reducing Simone Inzaghi’s attacking options.

Then we have Alexis Sanchez who, like Arnautovic, is a veteran striker who returned to Appiano Gentile for a second spell last summer.

But while the Chilean has been showing signs of improvement as of late, a weak spot-kick delivery blemished his progress

The 35-year-old is running on an expiring contract, and the management doesn’t appear too keen on offering him a renewal.

Finally, the source identifies Davy Klaassen as the third transfer flop.

The Dutchman rescinded his contract with Ajax to join the Nerazzurri on the final day of the summer transfer session.

However, the 30-year-old has hardly proved useful to the cause.

The Netherlands international entered the decisive match against Atletico as a substitute, but couldn’t beat Jan Oblak in the shootouts.

On the other hand, the report claims that the management still has faith in Stefan de Vrij despite his weak showing.

The defender has been putting on solid displays this season, but struggled against the Colchoneros.
