Inter Milan goalkeeper Yann Sommer could be fit for next week’s match against Empoli, whilst defender Stefan de Vrij is targeting a return against Udinese or Calgiari.

This according to Italian broadcaster Sky Sport Italia, via FCInterNews.

Inter are facing the prospect of something of an injury crisis in their backline.

Firstly, there is the situation of defender Francesco Acerbi. The Italian international is not injured, but rather faces the prospect of missing the rest of the season through suspension if he’s found guilty of racial abuse.

And two players who have been stalwarts at the back for Inter this season have further picked up injuries during the international break.

One is goalkeeper Sommer. The 35-year-old former Bayern Munich keeper picked up his injury during a friendly between Switzerland and Denmark.

Medical tests today confirmed that Sommer had suffered a sprain to his ankle.

Meanwhile, defender de Vrij initially went to be with the Netherlands national team for the break.

However, the 32-year-old returned to Milan early. This came after he had suffered a thigh strain, as medical tests today confirmed.

Sommer Could Return Vs Empoli – De Vrij Aiming For Udinese Or Cagliari

The big question now concerns when Sommer and de Vrij will be back.

Inter’s first match back from the break will be against Empoli next Monday.

And in the case of Sommer, the goalkeeper could be back for that match.

There is certainly no guarantee of the Swiss international recovering in time for that match. But it would not be out of the question based on his recovery timeline according to Sky.

Meanwhile, de Vrij will not be back to face Empoli.

Sky report that there would be basically no way of the former Lazio defender getting fit in time for that match.

Rather, the broadcaster anticipate, the Dutchman will aim to be back in one of the two matches following it.

Those are away to Udinese, and at home against Cagliari.
