Fiorentina legend Giancarlo Antognoni identifies Inter Milan star Nicolo Barella as the new symbol of Italy following his recent international exploits.

The Nerazzurri star donned the captain’s armband in the Azzurri’s last friendly test against Ecuador.

The 27-year-old played a vital role as Luciano Spalletti’s men prevailed by two unanswered goals. He bossed the middle of the park throughout the encounter and scored the second goal with a lovely chip.

Therefore, Antognoni recognizes Barella as the symbol of the Italian national team. He also reveals that the Nerazzurri star has been showcasing his strong character from a tender age.

“When I used to work with the Italian Football Federation, Barella had already proved in the Under-15 that he could become a great footballer,” said the iconic Fiorentina midfielder in his interview with Tuttosport via FcInterNews.

“He has the character, he scores goals, he plays at a big club and always leaves it all on the pitch.

“I’m sure Italy will do well in the next European Championship.

“I know Spalletti, he is an expert coach who likes to make his teams play well. And he knows how to combine technique and tenacity like few others.”

On another note, Antognoni insists that winning the Scudetto title would be a great achievement for Inter, one that must not be taken lightly.

“Inter will win the Scudetto with great merit.

“In the Champions League, they lost against a superb Atletico Madrid side. However, the Nerazzurri can console themselves with the second star. And that’s not a small achievement.”
