Matteo Darmian knows that relegation-battlers Empoli are motivated for this evening’s Serie A clash, but says Inter Milan want the win.

The 34-year-old spoke to InterTV ahead of the match, via FCInterNews.

This evening, Inter return to Serie A action from the international break.

On paper, it is hardly the most difficult of fixtures for the Nerazzurri to come back to. Empoli are currently right in the relegation zone.

That is a testament to the fact that the Tuscans perhaps don’t have the kind of quality in their squad that other teams in Serie A. And certainly not top-of-the-table Inter.

But at the same time, that table position means that Empoli will be full of motivation to get a shock result from the San Siro.

Last season, Empoli managed to get a surprise win away to Inter.

And that same result – or even a draw – would be a huge boost for the Tuscans.

All of Hellas Verona, Cagliari, Sassuolo, and Udinese dropped points earlier today. That is after Frosinone also drew on Saturday.

Therefore, there would be an opportunity for Empoli to make a big statement in the relegation dogfight.

Matteo Darmian: Empoli Need The Points – But Inter Want The Win

If Empoli are to spring a shock, however, they’ll have to face the most formidable challenge that Serie A has to offer this season.

So far this campaign, Inter have dropped points on just five occasions.

The Nerazzurri have drawn against the likes of Bologna, Juventus, Genoa, and Napoli. And they have lost just once, to Sassuolo.

Inter are aiming to clinch the Serie A title over the coming weeks.

And three points this evening would certainly constitute one more big step in that direction.

Inter wingback Darmian said that “We really want to get right back to it.”

“We’re at home, in a match that won’t be easy against an Empoli side who need points.”

“But we want to take all three points and keep going on the path we’re on,” Darmian continued.

The Inter wingback said that “A lot has changed for them over the season. The results show that.”

“They’re a tough team who don’t give you any space. They have quality, and we’ll have to be at our best in this match.”

“We want to get a lot of men forward into the attack,” Darmian said. “The fact that we have a lot of different goalscorers this season proves that.”

“But it’s not important who scores. Just that someone is there to put it away, so that we can take the points and the win.”
