Empoli are keen on signing young goalkeeper Filip Stankovic this summer if he does not stay at Sampdoria.

This according to Italian news outlet FCInterNews. The outlet report that the 22-year-old will not likely remain in Liguria unless the Blucerchiati are promoted to Serie A.

At the moment, Inter-owned keeper Stankovic is on loan with Sampdoria in Serie B.

The Blucerchiati signed the Serb on loan last summer. That loan deal includes a purchase option worth 7 million.

And should Sampdoria win promotion to the top flight for next season, then they will sign Stankovic on a permanent basis.

But it currently looks far from certain that Andrea Pirlo’s team will come straight back up to Serie A.

Sampdoria currently sit seventh in the Serie B table. They are fifteen points back from second place in the table.

Therefore, an automatic promotion finish would be off the table for the Blucerchiati.

That would mean facing the daunting prospect of the promotion playoffs.

Empoli Keen To Sign Filip Stankovic From Inter If Sampdoria Don’t

With this in mind, Inter are considering Stankovic’s offer in the event that Sampdoria do not come back up to Serie A.

The Nerazzurri are scanning for interest in the Serb.

And according to FCIN, there is one club in particular who see Stankovic as a target.

Empoli are still looking for a long-term solution in goal. They have yet to truly replace Guglielmo Vicario, who left to join Tottenham Hotspur last summer.

And veteran keeper Etrit Berisha will leave Empoli when his contract expires at the end of this June.

Therefore, FCIN report, the Tuscans have already indicated their interest in signing Stankovic.

However, that would all be dependent on the fate of Sampdoria’s season.

And then there is also the matter of Empoli’s status at the end of the campaign.

If the Tuscans are relegated to Serie B then they would hardly have the cash on hand to sign Stankovic. But if they avoid relegation, then they would be in position.

Should the Blucerchiati win promotion, that is likely where Stankovic will stay. But if not, then Empoli are already moving to sign the young keeper.
