Denzel Dumfries is favourite over Matteo Darmian to start on the right for Inter Milan in Monday’s Serie A clash with Udinese.

This according to today’s print edition of Milan-based newspaper Gazzetta dello Sport, via FCInterNews.

By and large, Inter’s first-choice starting eleven has been very settled this season.

But if there has been one major doubt, it has concerned the right flank. Both Dumfries and Darmian have started a significant number of matches at right-wingback.

Since the start of 2024, it has been Darmian who has gotten the nod more often. The 34-year-old had started against Empoli last Monday.

But Dumfries has also started a number of matches, particularly since regaining full match-fitness.

And according to the Gazzetta, the Dutchman will get the nod on the right against Udinese.

Dumfries To Get The Nod Over Darmian For Inter Vs Udinese

The Gazzetta report that Inter coach Simone Inzaghi is still making his decisions as far as the lineup to face Udinese on Monday, but is leaning towards Dumfries on the right.

A big part of the reason for this is that Inzaghi wants to keep the versatile Darmian in reserve.

The former Manchester United and Torino veteran’s versatility has been important for Inter this season. He is capable of playing on either flank, and also on the right of the back three.

And with Alessandro Bastoni a doubt for Monday’s match due to an injury, Inzaghi wants to be able to rely on Darmian on the left flank or in defense. This could be as a substitute.

Therefore, Darmian will likely begin the match on the bench, giving Dumfries the opportunity to start.

Meanwhile, the Gazzetta report, Yann Sommer will be back in goal.

The Swiss international did not start against Empoli last Monday as he was just coming back from an ankle problem. Emil Audero started that match in goal.

But Sommer has fully recovered from his injury. So he’ll be right back in the lineup on Monday.
