Former Nerazzurri and Cagliari midfielder Gianfranco Matteoli feels the current Inter Milan team has a similar winning mentality to the 1988-89 Serie A title-winning edition.

Matteoli gave his thoughts to Rome-based newspaper Corriere dello Sport in an interview published in yesterday’s print edition, via FCInterNews.

Inter have not quite gotten their hands on this season’s Serie A title.

But there is a strong sense that it is a matter of “when” rather than “if” the Nerazzurri clinch the Scudetto.

Inter have amassed a huge lead at the top of the table. They could secure the title mathematically speaking with a couple more wins – potentially in the derby against AC Milan.

And if Inter are to secure the title in such dominant fashion, it will be because of the consistency of the results they’ve gotten.

The Nerazzurri have found a variety of ways to win.

There have been victories by 4-0 scorelines. And there have been much narrower wins.

There have been matches where Inter have dominated possession of the ball. And there have been victories where they have exploited more of a counterattacking style.

But one way or another this season, Inter have found a way – winning 26 of their first 31 matches of the campaign.

Gianfranco Matteoli: Current Inter Have Similar Winning Mentality To 1988-89

Matteoli is a player who knows what it’s like to play for a dominant Inter team.

The former midfielder was a part of the team that won the Serie A title with a then-record points total during the 1988-89 season.

Asked about similarities between this Inter side and the one that he played for, Matteoli began that “It’s hard to make comparison.”

“Football during the period that I played was different from football now.”

“But we were lethal, just like the team is today,” the former midfielder said.

“We didn’t give anyone a chance. We killed off matches immediately, without many problems, in a season when everything just seemed to come easy to us.”

“And in that way, we are united with the current team,” Matteoli said. “That sense of killer instinct getting the result quickly.”

“Just winning. No calculations. You go out onto the pitch and you know you have to take three points because you’re the stronger team.”

“And because you have that winning mentality,” Matteoli added.
