Inter Milan are aiming to give themselves “match point” for the Serie A title against AC Milan with a victory against Cagliari this evening.

This is highlighted in today’s print edition of Rome-based newspaper Corriere dello Sport, via FCInterNews.

Inter have not yet clinched the Serie A title, mathematically speaking.

It is a matter of “when” rather than “if” undoubtedly. But there are still a couple more results needed at least to make certain that Inter will finish the season as champions.

The first could come against Cagliari this evening.

The Nerazzurri host the relegation-battling Sardinians at the San Siro.

A win against the Rossoblu would take Inter to 85 points in the table. Meanwhile, city rivals Milan will be aiming to finish the weekend with 71 points by beating Sassuolo today.

Inter Hope To Set Up “Match Point” In Serie A Vs AC Milan By Beating Cagliari

Significantly, the next match for Inter and Milan is the derby.

That will be the 33rd match of the season for the two city rivals.

If Inter were to win against Milan in that match after beating Cagliari, then they would go on to 88 points in the table – with the Rossoneri having, at most, 71 points.

And there would be five matches left – in other words, fifteen points to play for.

That would mean that, theoretically, the most points that Milan could finish the season with would be 86.

And with the Rossoneri as Inter’s closest challengers in the table, that would mean that it would become absolutely certain – the Nerazzurri would finish the season as champions of Serie A.

But first, Inter have work to do this evening.

Cagliari are in the relegation battle. But that means that Claudio Ranieri’s men have every motivation to get a surprise result against Inter.

The Nerazzurri, however, have clear motivation of their own.
