Inter Milan vice-president Javier Zanetti remains optimistic about the contract extension of club captain Lautaro Martinez.

Reports in the Italian media yesterday claimed the two parties have yet to find a final agreement over the player’s wages.

Yet, the legendary captain insists that his compatriot and heir will eventually put his signature on a new contract.

“Lautaro also said publicly he intends to say,” said Zanetti while chatting with journalists after appearing as a guest at the Libraccio bookshop in Viale Romolo 9 (via FcInterNews).

“When you see him in everyday life, you understand that he is very happy at the club and in the city, together with his family.

“It’s not just him, I think all of our players have expressed the desire to continue at Inter with great pride.

“This is a great pleasure for us because it means that there is a very important human value beyond the skill on the pitch.

“It has been six years that Lautaro has been here, The conditions for the renewal are there, so it depends on each of us and the right timing.

“The way I see it, he continues to display this sense of belonging.”

Zanetti also weighed in on the club’s summer plans. He believes Inter coach Simone Inzaghi already has some profiles in mind.

“We have already acted on the market [Taremi and Zielinski]. I believe that the moment will come when there will be a chance to make the team more competitive.

“But we have already proved to be a strong team. The coach certainly has in mind the players who would suit the project.”

Inter Milan Vice-President Javier Zanetti Insits Lautaro Martinez Is Happy At The Club

The 50-year-old also revealed that club president Steven Zhang remains in constant contact with the team.

“We often talk, he is always very close to us. He was extremely happy with the Serie A triumph.

“There are just a few days left until the refinancing date. The most important thing is that we work for the good of Inter and continue on this path.”

Zanetti was asked if he would like to maintain Inzaghi as head coach for a long period reminiscent of Manchester United’s legendary manager Sir Alex Ferguson.

“We must congratulate Simone for the extraordinary work he is doing along with his staff. The players are proving it on the pitch.

“But We must live in the present. I hope he has a successful career like Ferguson who is a football master.

“Inzaghi was heavily criticized last season when the results weren’t coming. On our part, there was the awareness that we would get out of the difficult moment.

“We proved it by reaching the Champions League final and this season with the Scudetto. He deserves it. He puts so much effort and trust in his work and this is what pays off in the end.”
