Former Nerazzurri captain Andrea Ranocchia feels that while Inter Milan already have a “competitive” squad, signings could help them in knockout competitions.

Ranocchia spoke to Italian broadcaster SportItalia, via FCInterNews, about how he feels his old team should strategize this summer.

This season, Inter have been absolutely dominant in Serie A.

There can be few complaints about a campaign that has seen the Nerazzurri brush past all of their rivals to the Serie A title by a wide margin.

Where there have been some major disappointments, however, is in the cup competitions.

In this sense, Inter’s season has been something of an inverse of last time out, when it was those knockout competitions that partly made up for a rocky campaign in the league.

Inter exited the Coppa Italia at the round of sixteen in December. That means they could not win that competition three times in a row.

Then in the Champions League, a competition that Inter reached the final of last season, the Nerazzurri squandered what was at one point a 2-0 advantage on aggregate to bomb out of the competition against Atletico Madrid.

Andrea Ranocchia: “Inter Milan Squad Competitive, But Signings Could Help With Cup Runs”

There are some questions about whether or not this Inter team can handle being at their best across all competitions.

Clearly over two seasons the Nerazzurri have shown that they have the quality to rise to the occasion in either Serie A or in the knockout competitions.

But as of yet, success in both at the same time has eluded Inter.

Ranocchia said that “It was a great season. The guys did brilliantly in the league.”

“We saw so much quality from them, the style of play.”

“The goal was to get the second star,” the former Inter defender noted. “And they deserved it.”

And of the upcoming summer transfer window, Ranocchia suggested that “It’s not easy to add to this team.”

“Because all of the players already there did so well. So meddling with a team like this is tricky.”

“But the club has already made two signings,” Ranocchia noted.

Inter are signing both Mehdi Taremi and Piotr ZIelinski on free transfer this summer.

“So it will be an even more complete team, which will be able to compete across several fronts over the next few years.”

“Adding to a team like that is never easy,” Ranocchia added. “But maybe next season they can also go further in the cup competitions.”

“That’s always important for a club like Inter,” he commented.
