Simone Inzaghi will give goalkeeper Raffaele Di Gennaro a run-out in this evening’s Serie A match against Hellas Verona.

This according to today’s print edition of Turin-based newspaper Tuttosport, via FCInterNews.

This season, Di Gennaro has been Inter’s third-choice goalkeeper.

The 30-year-old joined the Nerazzurri last summer from Serie C club Gubbio.

There was never any doubt that Di Gennaro would have a purely backup role.

Yann Sommer has been the first-choice keeper at Inter this season. The Swiss veteran joined the Nerazzurri from Bayern Munich last summer, with the Nerazzurri outlaying a decent fee to make him their Number One.

And then Emil Audero has also been at Inter on loan from Sampdoria since last summer.

Whereas Audero has made a number of appearances across all competitions this season – both when Sommer has been absent, and when the Swiss has been available – Di Gennaro has yet to.

Inzaghi To Give Raffaele Di Gennaro A Run-Out In Serie A Clash Vs Hellas Verona

Di Gennaro’s role has been one behind the scenes, rather than on the pitch.

The 30-year-old is a well-liked presence in training, where he helps glues the squad together.

Di Gennaro is also a player who came through the youth ranks at Inter. That is an important part of why he is at the club.

Having played for a number of teams in Serie B and Serie C over the last decade, Di Gennaro has returned to provide a connection to the youth ranks in the senior squad.

This is not entirely dissimilar to the role that Alex Cordaz played last season.

Cordaz was also a youth team player who returned to Inter to become the third-choice keeper.

Last season, Inter coach Simone Inzaghi gave Cordaz the chance to come off the bench in the second half of the Nerazzurri’s final match of the season, against Torino.

And Tuttosport report that it will be a similar story with Di Gennaro.

As a gesture of appreciation for the role that he has played behind the scenes this campaign, Inzaghi will put the third-choice keeper on as a substitute in the second half away to Verona tomorrow.
