Wingback Denzel Dumfries has accepted a contract extension offer from Inter Milan.

This according to today’s print edition of Milan-based newspaper Gazzetta dello Sport, via FCInterNews. The newspaper anticipate Dumfries will sign his new deal after EURO 2024

Wingback Dumfries has looked to be one Inter player who could either stay or go this summer.

The reason for the Dutchman’s somewhat uncertain situation has been his contract situation.

At the moment, Dumfries’s deal with Inter runs until the end of next June.

Therefore, Inter have made it a clear priority to tie the 28-year-old down on a new deal. They certainly don’t want to risk losing him on a free transfer in twelve months’ time.

Having already lost defender Milan Skriniar for nothing, Inter’s stance has been that they either want to extend Dumfries’s contract this summer or else cash in while they have the chance.

Given Dumfries’s situation, Inter have been in talks with the Dutchman’s representatives for several months now.

The initial talks saw a fair bit of distance between the parties.

Reports indicate that Dumfries’s representatives have made wage demands in the region of 5-5.5 million in order for the former PSV wingback to sign a new deal.

Meanwhile, Inter have only gone as high as 4 million net per season in their offer.

The Nerazzurri have dug in their heels. They have made clear that it would not be financially viable for them to offer any more than that.

Therefore, Inter’s stance has been that the offer is take-it-or-leave-it. Otherwise they would aim to sell Dumfries this summer.

But the Dutch international has decided to accept Inter’s offer.

Dumfries has little intention of departing Inter this summer, three years after joining from PSV.

The Gazzetta report that the 28-year-old will sign a four-year deal until the end of June 2028. This will bump his earnings up from 2.5 million net per season to 4 million net per season plus add-ons.

At the moment, Dumfries is in action with the Netherlands at EURO 2024.

But once the Euros conclude, the Dutchman will put pen to paper on his new contract with Inter.
