Inter Milan look to have three possible options in their search for a defender this summer.

This according to Sky Sport Italia transfer market expert Gianluca Di Marzio, via FCInterNews. He reports that Mario Hermoso, Ricardo Rodriguez, and the possibility of a younger defender are all in contention.

Inter are set to make a signing in defense.

And the Nerazzurri have a specific profile in mind. They want to sign a player who is capable of playing on the left of a back three.

Inter Sporting Director Piero Ausilio admitted that this is the club’s strategy.

The reason for this is that the Nerazzurri want to use Carlos Augusto exclusively as a wingback to cover for the injury to Tajon Buchanan.

The Canadian will miss the first few months of next season.

And Augusto had played at both wingback and in the back three last season. He had been a regular backup option to Alessandro Bastoni on the left of the defensive line.

Therefore, with the Brazilian tied up on the flank, Inter are aiming to have more cover on the left of the back three.

Hermoso, Rodriguez & A Younger Defender All Possibilities For Inter Milan

Sky transfer expert Di Marzio reports that one possibility for Inter would be to sign a player on a free transfer.

This would certainly be expedient. And Inter have developed a real knack for free transfer signings in recent years.

One prospective target would be Mario Hermoso.

The Spanish international is one of the most high profile players available on a free transfer this summer. His contract with Atletico Madrid expired at the end of last month.

Moreover, Hermoso would likely be the choice of Nerazzurri coach Simone Inzaghi.

However, the 29-year-old is not the only defender available on a free transfer this summer.

Swiss international Ricardo Rodriguez would represent a lower-cost signing to cover the defense.

Then, Di Marzio, a free transfer opportunity isn’t Inter’s only option. However, if the Nerazzurri were to spend a transfer fee on a defender, they would expect to invest in a younger player.

In this regard, bringing back Lorenzo Pirola from Salernitana would be a possibility.
