Carlos Augusto feels that he has “already shown” that he is capable of playing at wingback for Inter Milan.
The positionally versatile Brazilian spoke to Rome-based newspaper Corriere dello Sport, via FCInterNews, after Inter’s friendly draw against Pisa.
Next season, Augusto’s main role at Inter is almost certain to be on the flank.
That is the results of a serious injury sustained by wingback Tajon Buchanan this summer.
Buchanan, who joined Inter in the January transfer window, broke his leg while training with the Canadian national team at the Copa America.
With Buchanan set to be on the sidelines for the first few months of the upcoming season, there will be a significant hit to Inter’s wingback depth.
Therefore, Augusto will have an important role in terms of playing minutes on the flank.
Last season, the Brazilian played a roughly equal amount of minutes on the left flank, and on the left of the back three.
Carlos Augusto: “Already Shown I Can Play At Wingback For Inter Milan”
Augusto is certainly familiar with playing at wingback, though.
That is the position that Inter primarily signed the Brazilian for.
During the 2022-23 season with Monza, Augusto was one of the outstanding attacking wingbacks in Serie A.
The move to playing a defensive role for big parts of last season for Inter came as a result of necessity.
But if playing more at left-wingback is also necessary for Augusto, it will hardly be a new role for him.
Augusto commented after yesterday’s friendly against Pisa. “We have to train as best we can in preseason for a very long season ahead,” he said.
“There’s the advantage of having known each other since last season,” he went on.
“We’re integrating the new players in. We’re aiming to win, even if doing it all over again is never easy.”
And as far as playing at wingback, Augusto said that “I’ve already shown I can do it.”
“I’m here to grow and to help the team,” the 25-year-old added.
