Midfielder Henrikh Mkhitaryan is ready to play a more attacking role at Inter Milan when needed next season.
This according to today’s print edition of Milan-based newspaper Gazzetta dello Sport, via FCInterNews. They report that the coaching staff has already discussed the idea with the Armenian.
Inter coach Simone Inzaghi will have to find a solution in attack for the Nerazzurri’s first Serie A match of the season against Genoa.
There are a number of doubts regarding the fitness of the forwards in Inter’s squad.
Captain Lautaro Martinez will only be back in training a little over a week before the match against Genoa.
Meanwhile, the likes of Marko Arnautovic and Marcus Thuram have just returned in the last couple days.
Therefore, summer arrival Taremi had looked to have a very good chance of starting the Serie A opener. He has been in training right from the start of preseason.
However, Taremi has picked up a muscle injury in training.
It is uncertain whether the Iranian international will be available against Genoa. And he is unlikely to start.
Henrikh Mkhitaryan Ready For More Attacking Role At Inter Milan
With doubts about all of the strikers in the squad, Inzaghi could opt to shift Mkhitaryan to an attacking role.
The 35-year-old has played in attacking positions throughout his career.
Mkhitaryan has played in attacking midfield, as an attacking winger, and as a second striker. He has played in these positions for the likes of Shakhtar Donetsk, Borussia Dortmund, Manchester United, and Arsenal.
It was at Roma that Mkhitaryan really transitioned to playing in central midfield.
And that has been the role that the Armenian veteran has played for Inter since his arrival in 2022.
But as the prospective issues in attack for the match against Genoa demonstrate, Mkhitaryan may be more needed in a different role.
In attack, there are clearly questions about depth. Particularly when there are strikers missing or not at their best due to injury and fitness reasons.
But on the other hand, the depth in midfield looks greater than ever.
Piotr Zielinski has arrived at Inter from Napoli as a major midfield reinforcement. And meanwhile, Davide Frattesi and Kristjan Asllani will aim to play more of a role this season than they did last.
Therefore, Mkhitaryan may well be needed in attack throughout the campaign.
According to the Gazzetta, the 35-year-old has discussed the idea with Inter’s coaching staff. And he is ready to play in attack when called upon.
