Simone Inzaghi wants to put the Inter Milan spine from last season to the test in today’s friendly match against Chelsea.
This according to today’s print edition of Rome-based newspaper Corriere dello Sport, via FCInterNews.
Inter have one more preseason friendly to go before the competitive action starts.
The Nerazzurri are currently in London. They are set to take on Chelsea at Stamford Bridge.
Then, in less than a week’s time, the Serie A season will be upon Inter. They begin their title defense with an away trip to Liguria to face Genoa.
That makes the task of this afternoon’s match against Chelsea quite clear.
It is still a friendly, and Inter won’t care too much about the result.
But Inzaghi knows that his players cannot look like a team still very much under construction in this match and then expect to just click into gear against Genoa next Saturday.
The Inter coach wants clear signs that his team is nearly ready to face the season.
Simone Inzaghi Testing Inter Milan Spine In Friendly Clash Vs Chelsea
Inzaghi will go with what he expects to be the starting eleven for next weekend, with a couple of notable exceptions – Lautaro Martinez and Hakan Calhanoglu stayed behind to work on their fitness.
But by and large, this evening’s match will see Inzaghi test out the team he intends to go into next season with.
And one of the most striking aspects of that team could be the lack of new faces.
Inter have made a couple noteworthy signings this summer.
Both of Mehdi Taremi and Piotr Zieklinski will expect the chance to fight for a place in the starting eleven throughout the campaign to come.
But both Taremi and Zielinski are currently absent with muscle injuries.
Therefore Inzaghi will mostly be going with the spine of the team that won the Serie A title last season.
This afternoon’s friendly will be the big test of whether, after a tough summer with international tournaments, last campaign’s key players can rise to the occasion once again.
