The Mayor of Rozzano expects Inter Milan’s first choice for a stadium would be in Milan, but that his commune is “not out of the picture.”
Rozzano Mayor Giovanni Ferretti De Luca spoke to Il Giorno-Milano, via FCInterNews, on the stadium situation.
Friday marked a major turning point in the stadium situation of Inter and AC Milan.
The two clubs finally delivered a firm response to the proposal of Milan Mayor Beppe Sala and architectural firm WeBuild to renovate the San Siro.
The Nerazzurri and the Rossoneri made clear that, even if the iconic stadium is to be renovated, they will not stay in it in the long term.
That does not mean, however, that the clubs have made a final decision on the future in general.
There is still the possibility of a new stadium inside the city limits of Milan.
Inter and Milan continue to consider the possibility of building a new stadium adjacent to the San Siro.
The clubs cannot tear down the existing stadium and build in its place, as had been their plan for several years. But the San Siro area is still a possibility.
Rozzano Mayor: “Milan The Top Choice For Inter, But We’re Not Out Of The Picture”
On the other hand, Inter and Milan have both made significant headway on projects outside of Milan.
In the Rossoneri’s case, their focus has been on the commune of San Donato. They have already bought land in the area.
And Inter have been working in the commune of Rozzano.
The Mayor of that commune anticipated that “Inter’s first choice has always been a stadium in Milan.”
“But the idea of a stadium in Rozzano is definitely not out of the picture definitively,” he continued.
Rozzano Mayor Ferretti said that “Inter’s exclusive right is valid until January 2025.”
“And as far as I’m aware the owners have not communicated that they want to withdraw.”
Ferretti anticipated that Inter “will keep all avenues open until they make a final decision.”
“The position of San Siro is optimal, obviously,” the Rozzano Mayor said. “But if you look around Europe, all the top new stadiums are outside the city limits.”
