Walter Zenga feels that Inter Milan impressed against Man City in the Champions League, but are “lagging behind” in Serie A.
The legendary former Nerazzurri keeper gave his thoughts to Italian broadcaster Sky Sport Italia, via FCInterNews.
Inter’s form since the return from the international break has been something of a paradox.
The highlight for the Nerazzurri so far has undoubtedly been their away trip to face Manchester City.
The Cityzens are undoubtedly one of Europe’s strongest teams.
However, Inter were able to go toe-to-toe with the Premier League juggernauts.
The Nerazzurri had already done so in the final of the 2022-23 edition of the Champions League. But they still lost that match 0-1.
This time around, though, Inter did one better.
The Nerazzurri actually secured a point in what is on paper their toughest match of the Champions League “league phase.”
Zenga: “Inter Did Well Vs Man City, But Lagging In Serie A”
Inter followed that display against City up with a deeply underwhelming showing in the derby against AC Milan, however.
That was the first loss of the season for the Nerazzurri in any competition.
Inter had already drawn against the likes of Genoa and Monza, though.
Therefore, Inter have taken just eight points from their opening five matches in Serie A.
That is not exactly disastrous form. But it is nowhere near the pace that the Nerazzurri will need to be going at if they are to successfully defend their league title from last campaign.
Former Inter keeper Zenga was asked about the new Champions League format.
He said that “As with anything new, you need to understand it by understanding the mechanism.”
“For example: look at the league table in Serie A, you see that Inter are playing well against Manchester City – but then they’re sixth in Serie A.”
“In the Champions League round of sixteen you have eight potential opponents,” Zenga noted.
