While defensive errors have been the focus, Inter Milan have also not been clinical in front of goal in Serie A this season.
This is the view in today’s print edition of Milan-based newspaper Corriere della Sera, via FCInterNews. They identify missed chances by Nerazzurri captain Lautaro Martinez as particularly problematic.
When diagnosing Inter’s problems this season, it would be hard to overlook the defense.
The Nerazzurri have conceded nine goals already. That means that they are conceding at a rate of more than once per match – miles off last season’s stellar record.
And the switch-offs and errors causing this lack of defensive solidity are undeniably a major issue for Inter.
But in the view of the Corriere della Sera, there is also Inter’s attack to consider.
Not Just Defensive Errors – Inter Milan Attack Also Far From Clinical In Serie A
Inter have not exactly struggled for goals so far this season.
The Nerazzurri have managed to find the back of the net sixteen times. They have not failed to score in any of their matches so far in Serie A.
Therefore, by the numbers, Inter’s attack is not causing them nearly the same sorts of problem as their defense.
However, there is a little more to it than that.
Striker Marcus Thuram has gone on a scoring tear early on in the season. His hattrick against Torino on Saturday took him to seven goals.
But Inter captain Lautaro Martinez has not been a consistent source of goals.
The Argentine ended his goal drought with a quickfire brace either side of halftime against Udinese.
But other than that, Martinez has yet to score.
It is not as though the Nerazzurri captain hasn’t had chances. The Corriere della Sera note that he has taken a total of seventeen shots.
But Martinez is finding it hard to apply the clinical touch when he needs to.
And the same is true of much of the rest of Inter’s squad.
There are chances. Simone Inzaghi’s team can certainly create plenty of dangerous opportunities.
But so far only Thuram has really looked like a player who knows what to do with these chances.
