Denzel Dumfries admits that while representing Inter Milan is “beautiful” he plays better for the Netherlands national team.
The Netherlands international spoke to Dutch broadcaster Voetbal International, via FCInterNews. He admitted that there is something of a discrepancy in his form for club and country.
Dumfries remains a regular in the Netherlands starting eleven.
The 28-year-old does face competition from players like Jeremie Frimpong and Lutsharel Geertruida for the starting spot.
But Dumfries always seems to have the trust of the Netherlands coach. He has been starting regularly under current boss Ronald Koeman.
And Dumfries has certainly repaid the national team coaches’ faith with his performances.
Since the Euros in 2021, the Inter wingback has been a key man for the Oranje when it matters most.
Dumfries has made a real habit of popping up with important goals from the flank. Perhaps even moreso for the Netherlands than for Inter.
Denzel Dumfries: “Wearing The Inter Shirt Beautiful, But I Perform Better For Netherlands”
At Inter, Dumfries does start matches. But he is by no means a guarantee in the starting eleven.
On the contrary, it has been Matteo Darmian who has been the more regular starter for the Nerazzurri since Dumfries’s arrival.
Dumfries has started some big matches for Inter. This has included all of the knockout matches in the run to the 2023 Champions League final, and the final against Manchester City itself.
Moreover, Dumfries tends to come off the bench when he doesn’t start. There’s no question that Inter coach Simone Inzaghi trusts the Dutchman.
However, this season it has continued to be the case that Darmian starts more than Dumfries for Inter.
Dumfries said of playing for the national team that “It’s something to be proud of. It’s an honour.”
“Every time I put on the shirt it feels like a dream, I can’t explain it.”
“The Inter shirt is also beautiful, and I appreciate the value of it,” Dumfries continued.
“But somehow in the Netherlands shirt I manage to perform better,” he confessed.
