Inter Milan legend Cristian Chivu has offered his assessment of the growing defensive problems at Giuseppe Meazza.

During his latest interview with Radio Serie A, as reported by FCInterNews, Chivu discussed several topics, underscoring Inter’s chances of defending the Scudetto.

Simone Inzaghi based Inter’s dominant run to their 20th Serie A title last season on a rock-solid backline.

Indeed, the Nerazzurri conceded a league-low 22 goals last term, leaving second-placed AC Milan 19 points behind.

A perfect balance between the lines helped Inter perform equally well in attack, netting a league-high 89 goals.

However, things have gone south this year.

With 21 goals from nine Serie A matches, Inter are the second most prolific team behind Atalanta (24).

But Inzaghi’s men are no longer a defensive force to be reckoned with.

They’ve already conceded 13 goals, including 4-4 in a dramatic home draw against Juventus at the weekend.

On top of that, they only registered three clean sheets in the first nine rounds.

That’s a stark contrast to Inter’s European showings.

Following a 1-0 win at Young Boys, they’re one of only five sides yet to capitulate in the UEFA Champions League this term.

Translating that defensive approach to Serie A is imperative.

Cristian Chivu Takes Stock of Inter Milan Defensive Crisis

“They play proactive football. They attack with 7 or 8 players, aiming to dominate, and that’s why they’re more exposed,” Chivu explained.

“Last season, the defense was deeper, and they relied more on transitions.

“This choice reflects the confidence this team has built and the strength of individual players.

“There’s also little time to train with so many matches to play. After winning the second star, attention can dip slightly.

“Inter might not be at the same level as last year, but they remain very strong and can win the Scudetto again.”

Meanwhile, Chivu also discussed his relationship with Inzaghi.

“We’ve spent time on the field together during international breaks. He’s very helpful, as are his staff and the Club.

“I have a great relationship with him, and I can only say thank you.”
