Legendary former Inter Milan defender Marco Materazzi feels that Nerazzurri fans at the San Siro have “said what they have to say” to Romelu Lukaku.

The 2006 World Cup winner gave his thoughts to Naples-based newspaper Il Mattino in an interview published in today’s print edition, via FCInterNews.

It has now been over a year since Belgian striker Lukaku had his dramatic falling out with Inter.

Lukaku had spent a total of three seasons as a Nerazzurri player.

The Belgian joined Inter from Manchester United in the summer of 2019. He enjoyed two immensely successful seasons at the club.

That culminated in the Serie A title victory of the 2020-21 campaign. Lukaku was named as the best player in the league for that season.

Then in the summer of 2021, Inter sold Lukaku to Chelsea for a massive transfer fee.

This was controversial with Inter fans, but the ire was directed mainly at the club for selling a player like Lukaku to make up for their difficult financial situation.

Lukaku’s time at Chelsea was tough though. The Belgian did not live up to his price tag or reproduce his best form from Inter, and pushed for a return to the Nerazzurri.

Lukaku’s second time around at Inter did not go as well as the first, mainly due to injuries. But he still had plenty of positive moments.

Therefore, Inter tried to sign Lukaku on a permanent basis last summer, having only had him on loan from Chelsea.

However, after the Nerazzurri learned that the Belgian had also been negotiating with Juventus they abruptly pulled the plug on efforts to bring him back.

Materazzi: “San Siro Has Said What They Have To Say To Romelu Lukaku”

Lukaku ended up joining Roma on loan for last season.

The Belgian returned to the San Siro in the fall. And the Inter fans in the crowd reacted to his summer antics – by booing and whistling him.

This summer, Lukaku made yet another move – this time to Napoli.

The Partenopei have reunited Lukaku with Antonio Conte. This is the same coach that the Belgian worked under at Inter, and the coach who has gotten his best form out of him.

Therefore, the 31-year-old will certainly be a key player for Napoli if they’re to push for the Serie A title.

This weekend, Napoli face Inter. The Partenopei are first in the table, and the Nerazzurri second.

And the match is at the San Siro – where the Inter fans could once again give Lukaku a hostile reception.

But former Inter defender Materazzi isn’t expecting it to be too dramatic. “The San Siro has already said what they have to say to Lukaku,” he argued.

“He’ll certainly get some boos. But I don’t think the focus of the match will be on his return.”

Of coach Antonio Conte, Materazzi said that “Inter fans are smart.”

“They know Conte and how he’s made choices in his career. Inter fans only have positive memories of him.”
