Legendary former Inter Milan keeper Walter Zenga feels that Yann Sommer “won’t work miracles” but has great consistency.
Speaking on the ChampionsLounge Twitch channel, via FCInterNews, Zenga gave his thoughts on the current Nerazzurri Number One.
Inter signed Yann Sommer in the summer of 2023.
The Nerazzurri brought the Swiss international in from Bayern Munich to fill the void left in goal after the departure of Andre Onana in a big money move to Manchester United.
When Inter signed Sommer, they were getting a player with a very well-established reputation.
Sommer was well into his thirties by the time he joined the Nerazzurri.
Across nearly a decade at Borussia Monchengladbach, the Swiss had marked himself as one of the most consistent keepers in the Bundesliga, if not all of Europe.
Sommer then capped his time in the German top flight off with half a season at Bayern Munich. He won the Bundesliga title in Bavaria.
Meanwhile, Sommer also shone for the Swiss national team.
The 35-year-old has been the first-choice keeper for his national team for around a decade, although he stepped down after the Euros this summer.
Zenga: “Yann Sommer Won’t Work Miracles, But He’s 6.5/10 Season After Season”
Sommer won another league title in his first season at Inter. He followed up his Bundesliga triumph at Bayern with a Serie A title.
The 35-year-old more than played his role in that title triumph.
Sommer did not necessarily have that many saves to make behind an outstanding Nerazzurri defense.
But when he was called upon, the Swiss bailed the team out on numerous occasions.
Former Inter keeper Zenga said that “Sommer is a goalkeeper I’d always buy.”
“Because he’s a high-level performer. He doesn’t make miraculous saves, but he never lets you down.”
“He’s a 6.5/10 season after season,” the former Nerazzurri keeper said of the current first-choice between the posts at the club.
