Former AC Milan manager Arrigo Sacchi believes Atalanta could challenge Inter Milan for the Scudetto despite spending less in the transfer market.

During his interview with Gazzetta dello Sport via FCInterNews, Sacchi named Gian Piero Gasperini’s side valid title contenders in Serie A.

Atalanta entered November’s international break in high spirits.

Indeed, Gasperini’s side overturned a halftime deficit in a 2-1 home triumph against Udinese on Sunday.

That was their fifth consecutive league victory, moving them within a one-point distance of table-topping Napoli.

Moreover, last season’s UEFA Europa League winners have leapfrogged Inter in the standings, courtesy of a superior goal difference.

They are one of four sides level on 25 points after the opening 12 rounds alongside Inter, Fiorentina, and Lazio.

Arrigo Sacchi Offers His Assessment of Atalanta Scudetto Chances Amid Battle with Inter Milan and Napoli

Asked whether Atalanta can pip Inter and Napoli to the title, Arrigo Sacchi replied: “I say yes.

“Gasperini’s team plays well, and that’s the first ingredient to winning the title.

“They have a supportive fanbase and a united, competent club. It seems they have everything to go far. Although…

“Well, strictly speaking, and looking at the investments, there are other clubs that should be fighting for the Scudetto.

“I think of Inter, Milan, Juventus, Napoli, Roma – clubs that have spent much more than Atalanta in the market.

“But fortunately, football isn’t just about money, it’s about ideas. And in Bergamo, they have plenty of ideas, almost all good ones.”

However, Sacchi insists Atalanta’s lack of experience in these high-octane battles could be their scourge.

“The first: lack of experience. They are used to being near the top of the table, but not exactly at the very top.

“Sometimes, being up there can be draining. The second is the double commitment.

“Playing both in the league and the Champions League is complicated.”
