Inter Milan wingback Denzel Dumfries has spoken of his shock at seeing Hungary assistant coach Adam Szalai collapse on the bench during the Netherlands’ 4-0 win on Saturday.

The former PSV Eindhoven player was on the scoresheet as the Netherlands secured a comfortable win to bolster their chances of progressing in the UEFA Nations League with one game to go, and discussed the match in an interview with local media, as reported by FCInterNews.it.

However, the victory was overshadowed by a medical emergency as Hungary assistant Szalai collapsed on the touchline and appeared to have a seizure, leading to play being suspended for 13 minutes.

The ex-striker was taken to hospital and is in stable condition, but Dumfries revealed how concerning the situation had been whilst he was out on the pitch, particularly as he found himself caught up in a circle formed by the Hungarian players around Szalai.

“I don’t know if it was a smart decision for me to stay there,” Dumfries admitted.

“I found it really intense to watch, it was shocking. When the game resumed, I was still worried at times. However, the most important thing is that Szalai is okay now.”

Dumfries enjoyed a solid performance after adding an assist to the goal that he scored, and felt positive after the game.

“I scored a goal and made an assist, I have to be happy, but I thought that overall we should have been more clinical with the chances we created.”

“Sometimes we were a bit too passive.”

The Netherlands are still in the frame to reach the Last 16 of the UEFA Nations League and Dumfries hope to face some of his Inter teammates, particularly after Italy had knocked the Dutch out last time.

“It would be nice to draw Italy. We want revenge for the 3-2 defeat in 2023, and also it is a chance to face many of my teammates.”

Dumfries joined Inter in 2021 and has scored 13 goals in 146 appearances for the Nerazzurri.
