Henrikh Mkhitaryan says Inter Milan are “confident” about their chances in Serie A and the Champions League.
The former Arsenal and Roma midfielder spoke to Milan-based newspaper Corriere della Sera, via FCInterNews. He gave his thoughts on the Nerazzurri’s ambitions for the season.
Inter return from the international break in just a couple of days.
And they do so with the season very much in full swing.
Inter are in action in both Serie A and the Champions League within the next seven days. Then there will also be Coppa Italia and Supercoppa Italiana matches on the way soon enough.
In the league, Inter find themselves locked in an intensely competitive title race. All of the Nerazzurri, Napoli, Atalanta, Fiorentina, Lazio, and Juventus are within a couple points of each other at the top of the table.
And in the Champions League, Inter have been in fine form. They have yet to concede a goal, with their win over Arsenal earlier this month cementing their place in the “top eight.”
Henrikh Mkhitaryan: Inter “Confident” About Serie A & Champions League
In the Champions League, Inter are among the favourites. That is inevitable after they impressed in the final of the 2022-23 edition of the competition against Manchester City.
Inter midfielder Mkhitaryan looked back on that final. “Everyone thought City would score four goals against us,” he said.
“But we played well and deserved to draw it, and even win,” he continued.
Mkhitaryan said that “Reaching another final would be a dream.”
“Even if the road to that is even longer than it was two years ago.”
“But we believe,” Mkhitaryan made clear. “We’re confident that we can get their once again.”
As far as balancing the Champions League and Serie A the 35-year-old said that “All our objectives are equally important.”
Meanwhile, Mkhitaryan opened up about his start to the season. “Despite all my experience and my hunger I had a bad start,” the Armenian admitted.
“It’s not easy. And I wasn’t expecting it.”
“But I’m starting to find myself again and I’m doing well,” Mkhitaryan declared.
“I’m very critical of myself,” said the veteran midfielder, formerly of Borussia Dortmund and Manchester United.
“The comparison is with the Inter of last season. But we’re doing our best and giving 100%.”
Mkhitaryan said of Inter’s defensive record this season that “We know we’ve conceded a lot of goals.”
“And that we haven’t been clinical with all our chances.”
“But we’re working to reach the same level as last season.”
Mkhitaryan admitted that Inter have “dropped points that we didn’t need to.”
“Otherwise we’d already be top of the table.”
“We know that this is going to be a different season,” Mkhitaryan said of the more competitive title race than last campaign. “We have to do better,”
