Marcus Thuram and Lautaro Martinez are not “switching roles” at Inter Milan despite changes to the attacking dynamics.

This according to today’s print edition of Rome-based newspaper Corriere dello Sport, via FCInterNews.

Last season, Thuram and Martinez formed a very effective attacking partnership at Inter.

It was the Frenchman’s first season in Serie A. But he did not take long to find his footing and develop chemistry with Inter captain Martinez.

Part of the reason that partnership worked so well is that both Thuram and Martinez are very versatile players.

Both have proven to be effective goalscorers. But at the same time, each does a lot of other work for the team, on and off the ball.

That means that Thuram and Martinez have been able to link up well. They have also naturally created space for each other with their complementary movement.

Thuram & Lautaro Not “Switching Roles” At Inter

While both Thuram and Martinez got plenty of goals last season, it was Martinez in particular who was prolific.

The Argentine was the top scorer not just for Inter but for all of Serie A. He bagged 24 goals in the league.

Thuram, on the other hand, got thirteen. He did, however, have significantly more assists than Martinez.

This perhaps gave the impression that Thuram was the “support striker” for Martinez, at least in terms of scoring goals.

But then this campaign, that notion has been flipped on its head.

It is Thuram who has been in blazing form in front of goal. The 27-year-old has found the back of the net ten times in Serie A so far.

Martinez, by contrast, has struggled significantly for goals by his own standards.

The Inter captain has put in the hard yards for the team as always. And he has certainly shown a hunger goals. But so far, not many goals have arrived.

Thuram’s more prolific form is the result of the Frenchman honing his style in the penalty area, and developing poacher’s instincts more and more.

But this does not mean that suddenly it is Martinez who is “playing second fiddle” to his strike partner.

The issue for the Argentine is simply that he has lacked some sharpness. Fitness issues that have robbed him of a bit of pace and explosiveness surely account for some of this.

But there is no change to the underlying chemistry between Thuram and Martinez.

The former getting more goals doesn’t have to detracted from the latter’s scoring rate.
