Inter Milan midfielder Hakan Calhanoglu feels that Bayer Leverkusen are “on a great path” under Xabi Alonso.
The 30-year-old gave his thoughts on tomorrow’s Champions League opposition speaking to Sky Sport Italia, via FCInterNews.
Inter face Bayer Leverkusen in the Champions League tomorrow.
Leverkusen are the reigning Bundesliga champions. They won the title in dominant fashion last season, going the entire campaign without losing in the league.
That was the first time that Leverkusen have ever won the German league title.
Die Werkself have often had very strong teams over the years.
But over the past few seasons, there have been a lot of ups and downs.
When Xabi Alonso took over as coach, Leverkusen were struggling. But in his first season in charge, the Spaniard guided them to their greatest triumph in their history.
And while Leverkusen’s season hasn’t been quite as spectacular this time around, they will certainly be formidable opposition for Inter tomorrow.
Hakan Calhanoglu: “Bayer Leverkusen On A Great Path Under Xabi Alonso”
Inter midfielder Calhanoglu actually played for Leverkusen between 2014 and 2017.
“I’m happy to be playing against my former team,” he said.
“It’s great to be in this stadium again. It’s making me feel very emotional.”
Then, Calhanoglu noted that “When I was here I played as an attacking midfielder, or sometimes as a winger.”
“But now I feel very comfortable in my new position,” said the Turkish international. Calhanoglu plays in holding midfiled for Inter.
“Thanks to Inzaghi and his coaching staff who saw that I could do well playing there. I feel good, I’m trying to improve.”
Of Inter’s opponents tomorrow, Calhanoglu said that “They’re on a great path.”
“They’ve been playing very well under Xabi Alonso, who took over when they were in a very difficult period,” he noted.
“Leverkusen have always been a strong team. Including when I was there.”
“Tomorrow will be a great match,” Calhanoglu said.
“We’ve already come up against great teams like Manchester City, RB Leipzig, and Arsenal,” he noted.
“Tomorrow won’t be easy and we know it.”
“We have big goals in our mind,” Calhanoglu said of Inter’s Champions League ambitions. “Tomorrow we’ll try to give everything on the pitch.”
