Papu Gomez believes Atalanta can fight for the Serie A title, but that reigning champions Inter Milan “have something more.”

Gomez gave his thoughts on the Serie A title race in today’s print edition of Milan-based newspaper Gazzetta dello Sport, via FCInterNews.

The Serie A title race is certainly shaping up in a fascinating way.

This weekend saw more drama. Atalanta beat AC Milan convincingly to go top of the table, cementing their title credentials.

And Napoli suffered their second home defeat of the season against Lazio. That result both put a big dent in the Partenopei’s title charge, and put the Biancocelesti back on track as contenders after a loss to Parma.

Inter and Fiorentina, meanwhile, are three points back from Atalanta after wins over Parma and Cagliari.

However, there is a big asterisk. The Nerazzurri and La Viola have to play a makeup match. They faced off earlier this month, but the match was postponed.

Papu Gomez: “Atalanta Serie A Contenders, Inter Have Something More”

Gomez talked about the form of his old team Atalanta. “They’re getting the fans excited – some are even ‘crazy!'”

“They understand that they have a team who aren’t afraid of anything.”

“They’ve changed mentally as well,” Gomez argued. “Now they feel like they’re fans of a big team, they want to fight for the top places.”

And of the Serie A title prospects for Atalanta, he said “Absolutely!”

“They have character, they play well, they’re more mature. Why not let them dream of something more?”

But Gomez still urged caution. “I don’t know for sure yet,” he said. “We’re not even halfway through the season.”

“But I’d certainly say they can finish in the top three.”

“And I don’t see them as having a rival for the title who’s unbeatable,” the Argentine argued.

“Inter have something more,” Gomez admitted. “But there’s no team right now where Atalanta have to say, we’ll definitely lose to them.”
