Inter Milan manager Simone Inzaghi has explained his decision to play Mehdi Taremi ahead of Lautaro Martinez in tonight’s game against Bayer Leverkusen.

Speaking to Sky Sport via FCInterNews, the Scudetto-winning tactician praised the Iranian striker for his commitment and footballing qualities.

Despite still waiting for his first goal in Serie A, Taremi has been a first-team regular in the UEFA Champions League.

Indeed, his only strike for Inter arrived in this competition, courtesy of a spot-kick in a 4-0 romping of Red Star Belgrade in round two.

However, the 32-year-old has been a mere shadow of a goal-getter who used to score at will at Porto.

A lack of first-team opportunities has likely derailed his confidence, even though he has been Inzaghi’s first choice in Europe.

Indeed, Taremi has started all five Champions League matches this season.

Tonight will be his sixth start, with Inzaghi waxing lyrical about the veteran’s attitude in training.

Inter Milan Coach Simone Inzaghi Praises Mehdi Taremi Ahead of Bayer Leverkusen Clash

Asked whether he included Taremi in his starting XI for his past exploits against Leverkusen, Inzaghi replied: “No, he’s playing because he deserves it.

“He trains very well, understands the strong competition in the squad, and has always performed well when called upon.

“Certainly, we understand the importance of this game. It’s a tough opponent, one of the best in Europe.

“Their success last year and their Champions League run are no coincidence.

“We know it will be a tough challenge. But we’ve faced difficult matches before, and we must approach this one with great focus.”

Inzaghi insists Leverkusen’s notable rise under Xabi Alonso only serves as additional motivation for Inter.

“Huge motivation. We work every day for matches like this. The stadium will be sold out, but we’ll have many Inter fans in attendance.

“We’ll aim to give our best, knowing there will be difficulties, and we must manage them well.”

Inzaghi knows Inter must pay close attention to Florian Wirtz and Patrik Schick.

“Certainly, but also the wide players like Frimpong and Grimaldo,” he said.

“Their central defenders have been consistent, playing together for over a year and a half.

“It will be a tough challenge, and we’ll try to give our maximum.”
