Inter Milan wingback Denzel Dumfries earned comparisons with the iconic Maicon after scoring a sensational strike in the Italian Super Cup.
The Nerazzurri entered the mini-tournament in Riyadh as the ultimate favorites to win the trophy for the fourth time in a row. For their part, Inter continue to consolidate their status as the darling of Italian football betting fans. On Thursday, the Nerazzurri made short work of their Lombardian neighbours Atalanta in the tournament’s opening fixture.
Even though Lautaro Martinez was wasteful in front of goal, Simone Inzaghi’s men prevailed by two goals to nil.
Dumfries emerged as the ultimate hero by scoring two fabulous goals. But while the first was expertly executed, the second was an absolute jaw-dropper. The Dutchman’s long-range rocket beat the outstretched Marco Carnesecchi. The ball bounced in off the woodwork before hitting the net.
And yet, the 28-year-old argued he didn’t put on his best display despite scoring twice.
“I’m happy with my two goals. It wasn’t my best performance but I’m really happy,” said the former PSV Eindhoven man in his post-match interview (via FcInterNews).
“Now the focus is on the next match. We’re thinking about the final.”
Denzel Dumfries Earns Comparisons with Inter Milan Legend Maicon
The Netherlands international didn’t deny imitating the celebration of Inter treble winner Maicon.
“Maicon is a legend in the right-back role. I’m just happy to have scored and that’s it,” he said laughing.
Atalanta entered the match while leaving three key players on the bench (Charles De Ketelaere, Ademola Lookman and Ederson. Nevertheless, Dumfries insists these rotations are normal, as La Dea remains a solid opponent regardless.
“No we weren’t surprised. They remain a very strong team even if they rotate players. We were focused on the match regardless of their lineup”
Inter will take on the winner between Juventus and Milan in Monday’s final.
“These are two big clubs in Italy. We lost against Milan and drew against Juve in the league. We should do well against both, let’s see who wins tomorrow and we’ll prepare for the match.”
